Though mangosteen juice seldom has any side effects, one, apparently, is Diarrhea. We have no experience of it occurring but as this post will show, it does:
Question
This is a request for anyone that can help me with a new user of our mangosteen juice. The lady has been taking the juice at 2 oz. x 3 times per day [twice the maintenance order of mangosteen juice] and has done so for over a month.
Since she started she has had violent (her word) diarrhea.
I have suggested reducing the amount to 1 oz. x 3 times. If anyone has had any personal experience or knows of someone else with a similar situation please let me know ASAP and also give me your advice.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Kind regards,
Peter

Hello there Peter!
I agree with you, 1 oz. x 3 times a day should do it. I would also suggest she drink plenty of fluids. As you know, mangosteen has been used to treat diarrhea for centuries so it should actually be helping not making it worse. Perhaps her system needs some time to adjust.

Hi Peter!
I had a friend who had this symptom and for her, yogurt every morning solved the problem. We were going to try some acidophilus [yoghurt] if that didn’t do the trick for her, but it wasn’t necessary.
Cheers!
Kathleen
N.B.: Sam’s answer, which follows, though rambling, is full of great detail and definitely worth working your way through. We couldn’t really edit it as the flow would have been ruined, so, as Sam says, “Good luck”.

Hi All,
[In my group], I have had 6 cases that had from mild to very severe diarrhea, severe meaning [he] even had stomach cramps to degree he was ready to go to emergency. He called me and:
- I asked him to stop taking 1 week, or more until their stomach settled down…
- …and to drink plenty of water during that week…
- then re-start at 1/2 oz. 3 – 4 times a day and take the juice WITH his meal, not before and not later than within 10 – 15 minutes after…
- BUT most important ALWAYS with some food in his stomach first.. Even just some crackers, bread, etc.
- ALSO that he could dilute the 1/2 oz mangosteen juice with 3 – 4 or more oz. of water. Just make sure [to] drink it all and not let [it] “sit” as the pericarp will attach to the glass unless constantly stirred…
- and also to double his daily intake of just water…
He called 3 weeks later and was doing fine. That was 2 years ago and he is still on the juice…
I start most people off with 1 oz. x 3 times a day first week to make sure no stomach problems. Older people or people that have been taking MEDS for long time usually have some minor problem [in the] first weeks…
Any serving size of juice can be diluted with any amount of water, or another juice, or tea and even alcohol. Dilution does not affect the potency of the xanthones. It in fact helps absorption into the cells.
Yeah, I have one Asian couple in their late seventies that have religiously drank 3 oz. of vodka every night for many years. They now mix the 3 oz. vodka with 2 oz. [of mangosteen] juice and love the extended time to “sip” their nightcap. They call it their [MANGOSTEEN JUICE]-DRIVER.
I have also had a few people that developed constipation 1st week or two. Doing the above plus lots of water solved the problem…
We all have different amounts and types of toxins in our bodies. The juice immediately begins a detox process and needs fluid to flush out especially in the first few weeks.
Good luck…

Peter, I saw your post about the woman with violent diarrhea. I certainly agree with slowing it down to 1 oz. 3 x day as you suggested. I would [also] ask her if she has had any GI related illness before -Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease etc.
[There] are instances that going slowly, even 1 tablespoon 3 x day may be necessary to start.
On the other hand if this persists, I feel she needs to see a through doc or even a GI doc to see what the problem is. She could have parasites (very common), could be cancer and oozing around the lesion.
I have seen a number of people these last 4 years [at that time, since mangosteen juice has been available commercially] who started the juice and a symptom started - and when it was worked up, the real problem was [then] discovered. Had they not have been on the juice, the cancer etc. would have been missed.
I hope that helps.

I had mild diarrhea when I started on the mangosteen juice for about 3 days.
I was told to drink a lot of water and it decreased for day 2 and 3. Day 4 it stopped and I have been great since.
Heaps and heaps of energy, low cholesterol, blood pressure, off all antidepressants, lost 9 lbs in the first month from just wanting to exercise (917 to go!!!).
