One of the most pertinent questions about mangosteen juice is about the taste:
What Does Mangosteen Juice Taste Like?
Unfortunately that’s difficult for me to answer as the generic term mangosteen juice covers a number of products. I’ve tried three different commercially-available juices and they all have widely-differing tastes.
The reason for that is really in the nomenclature. You see, mangosteen juice should really be called mangosteen peel & fruit juice cocktail. Further, try to understand that boiled mangosteen peel is, arguably, the most vile taste known to Mankind.
Consequently, mangosteen juice makers have had to:
- remove as much of that original mangosteen peel taste as is possible & then
- blend in other pleasant-tasting juices to further disguise what’s left of the peel’s taste and horrible after-taste (yes, there are two distinct problems here!)
I can’t specify the brand names of the mangosteen juices that I’ve tried because I obviously prefer one and there are FDA restrictions (see why at: ABOUT THE TESTIMONIALS) in connecting a specified product to these testimonials. However, I will try to provide you with my opinion:
- the first mangosteen juice that I ever tasted was an exquisite cocktail, something like a thick, robust cranberry with hints of peach and strawberry and it understandably remains exceedingly popular in the mangosteen juice world. I always look forward to having it and wish I could have more. In fact, I would be happy to drink it as a slightly pulpy, exotic fruit juice / wine with any meal, it’s that pleasant
- the second is also reasonably well known but (when I tried it for three months in 2005/6) was (just) within the ball-park of the first juice but had a harsh, burning aftertaste. I see it purely as a powerful, life-saving (or changing) tonic but cannot believe that many people would consider drinking it for pleasure [By the way, this juice has often-repeated claims that it is the most effective mangosteen juice as judged by scientific data. However, in my experience, I only rate it as, perhaps, 70% as powerful as the first!]
- the final mangosteen juice was a sickly-sweet, syrupy cocktail that had the viscosity of thick cough medicine. While it tasted better than the second juice, it was still nowhere as pleasant as the first. [It's effectiveness was on par with the second juice]
I have only had mangosteen juice straight (it’s much better when it’s chilled) but friends say that # 1 is wonderful with lemonade, 7 Up etc. or even just with chilled soda water.
I hope that helps – it’s as much as I can legally provide, given the nature of this site. For me, there is presently only one mangosteen juice worth taking!

I have had two mangosteen juices from 2 different colleagues at work a few years ago. One was fruity and yummy, while the other one one was harsh going down but it came with a second drink that tasted good. I think they must be the two you have mentioned.I do not take either but I am investigating mangosteen for my mother who has bad arthritis – AND a weak stomach, so it needs to be the one that tastes good because she can’t hold much down that is not bland like boiled potato these days.
When [Brand name edited:] mangosteen juice is served chilled, it tastes like the best fruit punch you could imagine in which you can’t really make out the ingredients.
just thought I would tell anyon who is thinking of ordering mangosteen that it tastes real good. Three days in and im sleeping like a baby, heavy resting sleeps. best in years. Lots of energy but no progress on my arthritis – yet! Keep ya posted.
